Jesus’ instructions…Walk!
There was A LOT of walking in the Bible.
Jesus walked on water, the Israelites walked in the desert, Noah, Abraham & others walked faithfully, the disciples walked to spread the Gospel, God walked among us, we are called to walk in love, light and with the wise etc. Saul was transformed into Paul while walking and Jesus walked the road to Calvary.
In John 5, Jesus has a conversation with a lame man by a pool. Jesus asks the man, “Do you want to get well?” The man desires to be healed, but no one will help him. Jesus responds, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk. At once the man was cured, he picked up his mat and walked.”
Jesus’ instructions… WALK
I’m amazed by the simplicity of Jesus. Jesus didn’t tell the man to recite a long or complicated prayer. He didn’t say to go to church. He simply said, WALK. The man had to DO SOMETHING to show his faith. By getting up and walking the man trusted Jesus with his healing & wellness. Physical wellness is important, but for Jesus spiritual wellness has greater value (1 Timothy 4:8).
Walking can be a spiritual workout
One way we can get spiritually fit is by walking. Walking is often an overlooked spiritual practice - it feels too common & ordinary, but that’s what gives it it’s power. Walking can be a beautiful time of conversation and connection with Jesus. Moving your physical body can represent keeping in step with the Spirit (Gal. 5:25), walking by faith, letting go, healing and moving toward God. Personally, I’ve forgiven more people walking than I’ve ever done sitting.
Consider taking a walk for your next spiritual workout.
